Mike Nolan reports that Cook County health officials expect to have test results this week that may help to pinpoint the source of a Salmonella outbreak connected with a delicatessen at a Jewel-Osco store in Tinley Park.

The outbreak sickened 15 people, and tests so far show 11 of them having the same strain of salmonella bacteria, according to Amy Poole, spokeswoman for the county Department of Public Health.

Poole said the department is awaiting test results, expected by Friday, for the remaining four people as well as two deli workers at the store, 17117 Harlem Ave. She said test results completed for 17 other deli workers came back negative for Salmonella.

The department was notified June 11 about cases of salmonella from hospital lab tests, and the deli was temporarily closed and prepared foods thrown away, she said.

The department hasn’t been able to identify the source of the bacteria, other than to establish that there’s a connection between the store and the salmonella cases, Poole said.
